Ozone Day (International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer)

To celebrate "International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer" on September 16, Sermsang Power Corporation Public Company Limited (SSP) hosted an online event, "Greenovation Summit: From science to global action," with 26 participants. The summit aimed to raise awareness of the critical importance of the ozone layer and promote environmental innovation among employees, aligning with the 2025 theme.
The event featured Ms. Nuchkamon Joseph, our SHE Manager, who delivered an insightful keynote connecting scientific principles with actionable steps:
The Importance of the Ozone Layer The ozone layer acts as Earth’s shield from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A thinning ozone layer allows more UV-B radiation to reach living organisms and the environment, leading to extreme weather and health issues in humans, such as skin cancer and cataracts.
Global Crisis and Solutions The primary cause of ozone depletion is man-made chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which cause a chain reaction that continuously destroys ozone and creates "ozone holes" in many areas worldwide.
Ozone Day commemorates the "Montreal Protocol," a landmark global agreement that demonstrates monumental cooperation in phasing out ozone-depleting substances. The success of this agreement has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, with the ozone layer projected to recover to 1980 levels by 2040 (in most parts of the world) and 2066 (over Antarctica).
Innovation for a Sustainable World The event showcased examples of innovative renewable energy power plants that help reduce environmental impact, such as hybrid floating solar power plants, flying wind power turbines, and waste-to-energy technologies.
This event is part of SSP’s commitment to being a leader in clean and environmentally friendly energy, with clear sustainability goals:
Net Zero Target: Committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050.
Emissions Reduction: Reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 (from a 2024 baseline).
Clean Energy Capacity: Increasing clean energy generation capacity by over 30% by 2030 (from a 2023 baseline).
Water Efficiency: Improving water efficiency and reducing consumption by at least 10% by 2030 (from a 2024 baseline).
At SSP, we believe that clean energy does more than just help the planet—it powers a better future for all.
