Stories of a Blooming World: Empowering Everyone for Tomorrow

Future Energy When "Everyone" is a Vital Cog in Collective Growth

Looking back through history, the journey of "equality" stands as one of humanity’s most inspiring achievements. From an era where differences once served as dividing lines, today’s world has been entirely transformed. Conversations surrounding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) have transcended traditional boundaries, entering every organization, industry, and boardroom across the globe.

Because the future can only move forward steadily when everyone truly experiences a "safe space to thrive as their authentic selves".

From Historical Calls to Creating Safe Spaces

Humanity has journeyed through ages of collective learning, and the struggle for human dignity has always left profound imprints. One of the clearest reflections of this is Pride Month. While we are now familiar with its vibrant and festive parades, this celebration originated from the powerful Stonewall Uprising in 1969. During a time when being oneself was not accepted, the LGBTQ+ community stood up and raised their voices for fundamental rights—the right to have a safe space to be authentic. That act of courage blossomed into today's global celebration of pride.

Did You Know?

“Say it loud, gay is proud” — The Shout That Changed History

The word “Pride” was first adopted during the one-year anniversary march of the Stonewall Uprising in 1970 in New York City (Christopher Street Liberation Day). L. Craig Schoonmaker, a key activist, noted that "Shame is the poison, and pride is the antidote."

On that day, tens of thousands took to the streets, chanting "Say it loud, gay is proud!"—a slogan inspired by James Brown’s civil rights anthem "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud." This chant served as a declaration of freedom from fear and laid the foundation for Pride Month worldwide.

Decoding DEIB

The DEIB framework isn't just an academic theory; it permeates our daily lives—from tech code and toy design to architecture and iconic literature.

Diversity

The Keyboard Emoji (Reflecting Unique Identities): The beauty of human differences—gender, age, culture, or thought process—is reflected in the everyday smartphone emoji. Originally limited to a single yellow tone, emojis were expanded by the Unicode Consortium to include five skin tone modifiers based on the Fitzpatrick Scale, restoring visibility and dignity to every ethnicity in the digital realm.

  • Analogy: Inviting a diverse group of people to the party.

Equity

Barbie’s Toy Revolution: Equity is not about giving everyone the exact same thing; it is about recognizing that everyone starts from a different line. In 1985, Barbie introduced the legendary campaign "We Girls Can Do Anything" to empower young girls to break gender barriers. Today, Barbie continues to drive equity by offering dolls with diverse body types, skin tones, vitiligo, wheelchairs, and prosthetic limbs—ensuring every child sees a fair representation of themselves.

  • Analogy: Providing the necessary accommodation so everyone can access the party smoothly.

Inclusion

Steve Jobs and the Pixar Building: Creating an environment where every voice matters when an organization builds space for all to show their potential. Steve Jobs intentionally designed the main Pixar building around a central atrium containing the primary restrooms, mailboxes, and coffee shop. This physical design encouraged employees from different departments to bump into each other, exchange greetings, and collaborate respectfully as equals.

  • Analogy: Asking everyone at the party to dance together (referencing the famous quote by diversity expert Verna Myers).

Belonging

Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat: The pinnacle of DEIB is cultivating psychological safety to be oneself. In Harry Potter, new students anxiously face the Sorting Hat, fearing they won't fit in. The profound turning point occurs when Harry whispers, "Not Slytherin," and the Hat listens, placing him in Gryffindor. In organizational psychology and modern workplace studies (such as analysis on The Great Resignation), True Belonging cannot happen if employees are forced into boxes chosen by others. True belonging thrives when organizations provide a safe space for employees to use their voice and choose where they feel comfortable to grow—a workplace value modern talent prioritizes as much as compensation.

  • Analogy: Feeling that "This is our space, and we can dance to our own rhythm freely."
