Enhancing Solar Energy Yield through Reflective Sheet Installation

In 2026, Sermsang Power Corporation Public Company Limited (SPN) upgraded the solar panels at its Lopburi power plant from thin film modules to bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules, which generate electricity from both the front and rear surfaces. To improve renewable energy efficiency and maximize the utilization of existing assets (Resource Optimization), the company initiated a project to install white reflective sheets beneath the panels. The initiative aims to improve energy yield without increasing the number of solar panels, while also helping control weed growth beneath the panels.

A study of the Albedo Coefficient identified white surfaces as having the highest light reflectance, supporting their selection for the project.

Project Implementation

SPN installed white reflective sheets beneath the bifacial PV modules at Power House 1–2, covering an area of 17,351 square meters. The sheets were secured with anchoring pins to prevent displacement by wind. Electricity generation was monitored over approximately three months under varying weather conditions, including sunny, cloudy, and rainy periods. Performance was compared with the nearby Power House 1–3 reference area over the same period to evaluate the improvement in energy yield.

Project Results

The Phase 1 evaluation recorded an increase in electricity generation of 36,685 kWh, equivalent to a 4.30% improvement compared with the reference area. The results demonstrate improved energy yield and more efficient utilization of existing renewable energy assets without increasing the number of solar panels.

Future Direction

SPN will continue monitoring and evaluating electricity generation performance and operational suitability to support consideration of potential implementation in other areas, where appropriate. The initiative reflects the company's commitment to resource efficiency, resource optimization, and continuous operational improvement to support sustainable renewable energy generation.
